About the Art
Growing up in the states was filled with endless dualities. A slice of cheese for lunch while my mom served fufu with egusi for dinner. BYB cranked at the homecoming dance while Shina Peters blared through my dad's speakers on the morning car rides to school. But in the early ‘00s, a bridge was formed. That was when I first experienced the intro to Common’s "Like Water for Chocolate." From the kick of the drums, I could have mistaken this for my dad’s collection but he was still using cassettes at the time. After scanning the song for cuss words, I played a snippet and he grinned with a hint of nostalgia followed by an overdose of surprise. He goes on to tell me a story about when he and my uncle snuck into the Shrine in the ‘60s. I thought to myself: Pops was cool.
